Tuna Potato Gratin with Melty Cheese
Creamy layered potatoes with tuna, golden onions, and a melty cheese top—simple, hearty, and irresistibly cozy.
Ingredients
- 1500 g potatoes (thinly sliced)
- 400 g tuna in water, drained
- 150 g yellow onion (thinly sliced)
- 200 g melting cheese (grated)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt (to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (parsley or chives), plus extra for garnish
Directions
- Prep: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a medium baking dish.
- Par-cook potatoes (optional but recommended): Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add sliced potatoes and cook 5 minutes until just tender. Drain and let cool slightly.
- Sauté onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook onions with a pinch of salt for 5–7 minutes until soft and lightly golden. Remove from heat.
- Season tuna: Flake the drained tuna in a bowl. Season with pepper, paprika (optional), and half the chopped herbs.
- Layer: Arrange half the potatoes in the dish. Top with half the sautéed onions and half the tuna. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and tuna.
- Cheese: Scatter the grated melting cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake: Cover loosely with foil and bake 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until the top is golden and the gratin is bubbling at the edges.
- Finish: Rest 10 minutes, garnish with remaining herbs, and serve warm.
