Homemade Meat Pie

Ingredients

For the Pastry

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 200g cold butter, cubed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) cold water

For the Filling

  • 3/4 lb (350g) ground beef
  • 1 potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large carrot, diced
  • 1 cup (240ml) water or beef broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 egg, for brushing

Directions

  1. Pastry: Mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Rub in butter until crumbly. Beat eggs with cold water, add to flour mixture, and form dough. Cover and rest 30 minutes.
  2. Filling: Heat oil in pan. Sauté onion 5–6 minutes. Add carrots and potatoes, cook 3–4 minutes. Add beef, cook 4–5 minutes, breaking apart. Season with salt, pepper, thyme, and flour. Stir in broth and simmer until thickened.
  3. Shape: Divide dough into 4 pieces. Roll to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into rounds.
  4. Fill: Place 1–2 tbsp filling in center. Fold over dough, seal edges with fingers or fork. Poke with fork for steam outlet.
  5. Bake: Brush with beaten egg. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden. Cool slightly before serving.
