French Onion Soup Burgers 🍔🧅🧀
Juicy beef patties topped with caramelized onions, melted cheese, and rich French onion flavor.
Ingredients
For the Burger Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking the onions)
For the Onions & Toppings
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
- ½ cup beef broth
- 4 slices Gruyere or Swiss cheese
- 4 burger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes until golden and caramelized. Stir in thyme and beef broth, simmer until reduced.
- Prepare Patties: Season ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into 4 patties.
- Cook Patties: Grill or pan-sear patties over medium-high heat for 4–5 minutes per side, until desired doneness.
- Add Cheese: Place a slice of Gruyere or Swiss cheese on each patty. Cover skillet or grill briefly until cheese melts.
- Assemble Burgers: Place patties on toasted buns. Top generously with caramelized onion mixture.
- Serve: Enjoy hot with fries or a side salad.
