Juicy beef patties topped with caramelized onions, melted cheese, and rich French onion flavor.

Ingredients

For the Burger Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking the onions)

For the Onions & Toppings

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 4 slices Gruyere or Swiss cheese
  • 4 burger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes until golden and caramelized. Stir in thyme and beef broth, simmer until reduced.
  2. Prepare Patties: Season ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into 4 patties.
  3. Cook Patties: Grill or pan-sear patties over medium-high heat for 4–5 minutes per side, until desired doneness.
  4. Add Cheese: Place a slice of Gruyere or Swiss cheese on each patty. Cover skillet or grill briefly until cheese melts.
  5. Assemble Burgers: Place patties on toasted buns. Top generously with caramelized onion mixture.
  6. Serve: Enjoy hot with fries or a side salad.
