Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4–5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Set oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Form Patties: Mix ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 6 patties.
  3. Brown Patties: In a skillet, sear patties on both sides (do not fully cook). Set aside.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, whisk 1 cup milk with flour until smooth. Slowly add remaining 1 cup milk, whisking until thickened. Season to taste.
  5. Layer: Place half the potato slices in the dish, then half the onion slices. Add browned patties on top. Layer remaining potatoes and onions.
  6. Assemble: Pour gravy evenly over everything. Cover with foil.
  7. Bake: Bake 1 hour. Remove foil, sprinkle cheddar cheese, and bake uncovered 15 minutes until melted and golden.
  8. Serve: Let rest briefly before slicing into hearty portions.
