Ingredients

For the Cake

  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup hot water (or hot coffee for stronger flavor)

For the Fudge Topping

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • ½ cup whole pecan halves (for topping)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Batter: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease 8×8 pan. Whisk flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add milk, oil, egg, and vanilla; mix smooth. Stir in hot water or coffee. Pour into pan.
  2. Bake: Bake 25–30 min until center springs back. Cool slightly (not fully) to help topping soak in.
  3. Make Fudge Topping: Heat cream and butter until steaming. Pour over chocolate chips; let sit 2 min. Stir smooth and glossy. Add chopped pecans and salt.
  4. Assemble: Pour warm fudge over warm cake. Spread evenly. Top with pecan halves. Rest 20 min before slicing.
