French Onion Chicken Bake 🧅🍗🧀
Tender chicken breasts baked in a rich caramelized onion sauce, topped with melted Gruyere and Parmesan.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef or chicken broth
- 3 cups shredded Gruyere cheese (or Swiss cheese)
- ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes until golden and caramelized. Stir in garlic and cook 1–2 minutes.
- Make Sauce: Sprinkle flour over onions, stir well, then add broth. Simmer until thickened into a rich sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
- Prepare Chicken: Place chicken breasts in a greased baking dish. Pour onion sauce over the chicken.
- Add Cheese: Sprinkle Gruyere and Parmesan evenly over the top.
- Bake: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve: Garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired. Serve hot with crusty bread or mashed potatoes.
