Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside—these classic Southern hush puppies are the perfect side dish!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped (or grated)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in buttermilk, egg, and onion until a thick batter forms.
  3. Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Fry: Drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  5. Drain: Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve: Enjoy warm with tartar sauce, ranch, or alongside fried fish.
