Golden Southern Hush Puppies 🌽🍞
Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside—these classic Southern hush puppies are the perfect side dish!
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- ½ small onion, finely chopped (or grated)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in buttermilk, egg, and onion until a thick batter forms.
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry: Drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Drain: Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve: Enjoy warm with tartar sauce, ranch, or alongside fried fish.
