Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour 🥣
  • 1 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar 🍬
  • 3/4 cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder 🍫
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 🥄
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 🥄
  • 1/2 tsp salt 🧂
  • 2 large eggs 🥚
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk 🥛
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil 🛢️
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract 🌼
  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water 💧

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened 🧈
  • 3 1/2 cups (440g) powdered sugar 🍭
  • 1/2 cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder 🍫
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk 🥛
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract 🌼

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin).
  4. Bake: Divide batter between pans. Bake 30–35 minutes until toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Cool: Let cakes cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
  6. Make Frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa, then milk and vanilla. Beat until fluffy.
  7. Assemble: Frost one cake layer, stack the second, and frost the entire cake. Enjoy!
