Salt Dough Recipe for Christmas Ornaments

Salt Dough Recipe for Christmas Ornaments

✨ Introduction

Make long-lasting Christmas ornaments with simple salt dough—kid-friendly, budget-friendly, and perfect for keepsakes 🎄🧂🎨.

🧂 Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup fine salt
  • ½ cup warm water
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon vegetable oil for smoother dough

🌀 Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour and salt thoroughly.
  2. Slowly add warm water while kneading until a soft, non-sticky dough forms.
  3. If the dough feels dry or crumbly, add a few drops of oil or water.
  4. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes before shaping.

✂️ Shaping & decorating

  1. Roll out the dough (about 1 cm thick).
  2. Cut shapes with cookie cutters or make hand/foot impressions.
  3. Use a straw or stick to poke a hanging hole at the top.
  4. Air dry 24–48 hours or bake at 100°C (210°F) for 1–2 hours until hard (do not brown).
  5. Once dry, paint with acrylics; add glitter, ribbons, or stickers.
  6. Thread ribbon or twine through the hole to hang.

💡 Tips

  • Work on parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • For crisp edges, chill shaped dough 15 minutes before drying/baking.
  • Flip ornaments halfway through drying for even hardening.
  • Seal finished ornaments with clear acrylic varnish to protect paint.

📦 Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep away from moisture; use silica gel packets if storing long-term.

⚠️ Notes

  • Salt dough is not edible—keep away from pets and small children.
  • Avoid high heat; low and slow drying prevents puffing and cracks.
